ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Elementary Program offers a high standard of academics that encourages students to think clearly, logically, and independently. It endeavors to instruct children in spiritual matters as they are set forth in the Bible. The program seeks to build Christian character into the lives of students through the exercise of consistent Christian disciplines that enable them to live uprightly with their fellow man and to experience emotional stability.

Grades 1 through 5 are completely self- contained. Instructional materials used in the classroom are of the highest quality. The textbooks present the subject material in an orderly, developmental sequence. The principles of Scripture are then naturally woven into the subject, thus providing an integrated approach to education. Physical education, art, music, and computer literacy are supplements to our academic program.

CURRICULUM

The A-Beka Curriculum is used in each Elementary classroom at San Jacinto Christian. A-Beka curriculum--written on the premise that all truth comes from God--makes available the accumulated wisdom of years of experience by Christian educators in Christian schools. The Christian approach to education and life is woven throughout. Character training is built into the presentation of each subject area. This is a strong foundation on which the teacher can build a full program within the classroom.

Bible: Besides giving a clear plan for teaching the Bible, A-Beka gives the teacher plans for teaching scripturally-sound principles throughout the school day. In each grade students are expected to commit to memory significant portions of Scripture.

Reading: The reading program uses a phonetic approach to build the skills that lead to reading. Sound-symbol relationships are strongly emphasized in Grades 1, 2, and 3. The development of precise word attack skills is stressed at all primary levels. Comprehension and critical thinking complement the strong basic skills focus for teaching in Grades 4 and 5. The subject matter contained in reading texts is of outstanding quality and is consistent with our Christian values and ethics. Reading is the primary focal point of instruction at all grade levels, because it permeates every other subject. Vocabulary and spelling programs are natural outgrowths of the reading texts.

Language Arts: Instruction and emphasis is placed on both oral and written skills. Formal studies in English grammar using the Shurley Language Method begin in Grade 1 and continue through Grade 5. Correct spelling is emphasized in every subject area. Mastery of a weekly list of spelling words is required at each grade level. Cursive writing is taught beginning in second grade.

Mathematics: Traditional mathematics are taught at each grade level, with a developmental approach emphasized through second grade. In Grade 1, students study basic addition and subtraction facts. They learn to add and subtract two-digit numbers up to sums of 99, but without "carrying" or "borrowing." In Grade 2, students learn to add and subtract two-digit numbers with carrying and borrowing. An introduction to multiplication begins during the final nine weeks. Third grade math deals with intensive multiplication drills and the corresponding division facts. Math in Grade 4 deals mostly with multiplication and division. Easy fractions and decimals are added and subtracted. In Grade 5, multiplication and division are completely mastered. Fractions and decimals take on added importance, and percentages are introduced.

History: Concepts are developed as they relate to the home, the community, the state and the nation. In these early years, a love and appreciation for the American way of life is nurtured. Texas history, American history, world history, and geography are component parts of our history program. The program in Grade 4 involves a more formal study of American history. The program in Grade 5 focuses on world culture and ancient civilizations.

Science: Simple concepts are introduced in Grade 1 as they relate generally to Heaven and earth. The program in Grades 2-5 focuses on animal and plant life, the physical world, the solar system, climatic conditions, creation, health and nutrition. God is viewed as the Creator of the universe, and His design and purpose is taught in conjunction with every science topic. Hands-on science, demonstrations, and experiments are emphasized in Grades 3-5.

Music: Grades 1-5 receive a minimum of sixty minutes of formal music instruction each week. Singing is taught as an appropriate expression of an inner joy as derived from a knowledge and love for God. Music theory and sight reading are taught. Several musical productions are given every year by all grade levels. Trained music educators are available to encourage students to develop any vocal and/or instrumental talents they may have. Music Theory is emphasized in Grades 4 and 5 to prepare students for band and advanced vocal training. Private piano lessons can be arranged upon request, for a minimal charge.

Art: Students are given informal instruction through craft projects, paintings, and drawings done in conjunction with academic subjects and special seasonal emphasis. A trained art instructor integrates projects into the programs.

Physical education: All elementary students have physical education under the direction of a qualified instructor. The development of gross motor skills is stressed. Creative games and activities promoting physical fitness characterize the program. Team sports and competition distinguish the activities in Grades 4-5.

Athletics: Elementary students participate in team sports through Kids, Inc. San Jacinto teams are coached by parents and compete against public schools throughout the city.
